Strange Bedfellows? Horned Frogs and Swine

Posted by KilgoreTroutIII

Horned Frog fans might have thought the football team wouldn’t be wallowing with Hogs anymore after the Arkansas Razorbacks left the old Southwest Conference (R.I.P.) in 1990. But now, TCU head football coach Gary Patterson reports that at least five, maybe seven, of his players have contracted the H1N1 influenza, popularly called swine flu, including highly touted freshman running back Ed Wesley. Some are walk-ons, he said.

So, should teams re-examine their facilities and shower room practices? The New York Times reports that a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children and young adults are particularly susceptible to flu bugs because they haven’t built up immunities as much as older adults. And locker rooms are “an ideal situation for the flu,” she said.

And who knows how many more cases might arise in Horned Frog Land? At Tulane “31 football players and 6 members of the volleyball team were believed to have come down with swine flu.,” the Times reports.
