BMXer Tank Carder for the Defense

Posted by KilgoreTroutIII

With seven national BMX titles and one international championship under his belt by the time he was 10 years old, Ricky “Tank” Carder switched to football and baseball. Now the redshirt sophomore is the  starting middle linebacker for TCU, the NCAA’s best defensive football program.

With a nickname like Tank, which he was given as a toddler, you wouldn’t expect him to be a ballet star. But there was doubt he would ever be able to play full contact football after a life-threatening auto accident when he was in the seventh grade, reports Stefan Stevenson for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

So, Tank became a kicker and punter as a high school freshman and sophomore and was named All-State. For his last two years he was cleared to play full contact and was selected as Defensive Player of the Year for the Houston area.

Now he’s trying to fill the shoes of Jason Phillips, an all conference beast and fifth round draft pick, who has played in both preseason games for the Baltimore Ravens.
